Guys don’t keep diaries; it’s called a journal when we do it. Or that was the case until the recent rise in popularity of blogs.
The advent of the Information Age has meant globalisation, connectivity, and frankly, the loss of privacy. I mean, can we truly say we know someone until we’ve stalked them on Facebook? No longer are our lives solely our own. Everything we do can be instantly shared with the outside world, each and everyone one of us the star of our very own Truman Show. Journals (or diaries for you ladies out there), were once a means of self-reflection and a haven for our most private thoughts and feelings. But then again, they were almost always coincidentally placed in hiding places that *our un-prying moms and siblings could conveniently chance upon. Like under your mattress.
*note the use of “our” here is a literature technique to make the audience feel included, and does not actually refer to the author himself.
So for what reasons do we blog? Is it a way for us to keep track of our busy lives? Is it a desperate cry for attention? Perhaps a dire plea for help? Or is it a means of developing free-style writing skills in preparation for our Master’s thesis? Mine is the latter, in case you were wondering. Like, honestly.
Is it arrogant to think that what you have to say about your life is worth the time of other people? Is it pretentious to try and make sentimental remarks on a contemporary issue, or use big words and write in a style that has pretensions of grandeur and thoughtfulness? Honestly, why do people blog?
I feel like im trying to do too many things at once here. Every blog has a consistent theme or style. I guess im still trying to figure out mine.
I agree with your every sentence.. except I do it for the attention and the need for others to read about me, to know me because I crave the acknowledgement. But that's just me. Know me before you judge me :D
